Slate Valley Cares (SVC) is dedicated to building resilient communities by empowering individuals, fostering community connections, and ensuring the fundamental right to food for all. Our mission focuses on fulfilling the right to food by operating a Right to Food Center 5 days a week, allowing community members who are experiencing food insecurity to select groceries for their households for free every week.
Located in downtown Fair Haven, Slate Valley Cares has been in operation since 1983, first under the name "Fair Haven Concerned." As the organization expanded to serve residents of towns beyond Fair Haven in the last 5 years, the name was changed to better represent the growing service area.
Slate Valley Cares serves over 800 households per month.
95% of food is bought directly by Slate Valley Cares for distribution into the community. The remaining 5% of food is sourced by local community donations and food rescue.
Slate Valley Cares is open 5 days per week, for a total of 31 hours. Slate Valley Cares is open three times more often than the largest food charity site in Rutland County.
Slate Valley Cares' open hours are volunteer-powered! Thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers.
